I wanted to follow up on the Huffington Post “Reject U.S. Corporatocracy Ambitions in Venezuela, Iran, against Wikileaks. . . ” article I wrote – and let all of you know that our activism and the growing public outcry has forced Juan Manuel Santos, Colombia’s new president, to be conciliatory toward Venezuela. We see this in his statement, “”We have decided that both countries will reestablish their diplomatic ties and look to the future, in a road map, so that all aspects of the relationship can progress and advance and can deepen.”
And we’ve seen Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez in response saying , “We have established some principles. We have set the foundation stone of our new relationship. Now we must look after it with very sensitive efforts.”
I think the term sensitive efforts is important because while the news is good that this happened, it is up to all of us to continue the pressure on President Santos so that he does not resort to the draconian tactics of his predecessor and former boss, President Uribe. We must continue to let our voices be heard because Santos must be willing to follow through with his statement of advancing the relationship and not resort to terror or other threats that have characterized Colombia’s attitude toward Venezuela and Ecuador in the past. We must also recognize that Santos, like Uribe, will be pressured by Washington, especially the CIA, to make life uncomfortable for both Chavez and Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa. I thank you all for the actions you have taken. Let us all see this as a guiding light, prove that we the people have the power to create a more just, peaceful, and sustainable world.
